Good questions. I think most women who experience domestic violence would like to know the answers. As I read and digested the article, I realized the Vernetta’s story is all our stories. We are conditioned by the system to think we’re the only ones who think the system doesn’t work. The truth is that it doesn’t work for most of us. “Fell through the cracks,” is a phrase that sets my teeth on edge. Callous indifference is more accurate.
Many women and children ~ some men too ~ are finding there isn’t much justice in our legal system. In fact, the legal system is easily manipulated as an instrument of abuse. Several bloggers, especially WordPress’ MamaLiberty, are vigilant watchdogs. If you haven’t visited her site, I encourage you to do so. You will laugh. You will cry. You may get angry.
Vernetta is a perfect example of an advocate for domestic violence. She has done everything right, and the most important thing she’s done is that she never gave up.
Today I’m blowing the whistle on a corrupt system. I promised myself when I started this site that I would only write positive stories. But, I think it is time for y’all to know the truth about how the system operates. . .notice I did not use the word “works.”
Is Nancy Tyler’s nightmare over? I doubt it. Arrest and court records hold abundant evidence that Richard intends to kill Nancy. The clear pattern is that his brother will pay the bail, Richard will be released, and the court proceedings will drag on and on. Even if he is convicted, Nancy fears the day he will be released from prison. Richard has threatened too many times.
I am very concerned that the “blue wall” of protection surrounding her abusive former brother-in-law and Alaska state trooper Mike Wooten was a major factor in Gov. Palin’s decision to resign. If a state governor can’t effectively protect her sister from an abusive cop, where do the rest of us go for protection when the cops are corrupt?
It took seven years and two trips to the appellate court for Vernetta Cockerham to receive justice. About 45 supporters wearing puple and white ribbons came to the preliminary hearing at the Yadkin County, NC court house.
Domestic violence judicial history will be made at 10:00 AM on Monday, June 29, when Vernetta Cockerham-Ellerbee will finally get her day in court.
After four days of deliberation, the jury found Christian Karl Gerhartsreiter (“Clark Rockefeller”) guilty of custodial kidnapping and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon charge. As I write this blog, I am listening live to the sentencing hearing at WCVB’s web page. I am grateful to them for their coverage of this trial as well as the abundant resources they have provided during the pendancy of this trial on their web site.
Citing “Rockefeller’s” disregard for his daughter’s welfare when he kidnapped her, Judge Frank M. Gaziano sentenced him to five years for custodial kidnapping and three years for assault and battery with the sentences to be served concurrently (at the same time).
