Of Skunks & Narcissists

Don’t get into a pissing contest with a skunk.
– Down home wisdom

Skunks are cute.  They look all cuddly and sweet.  But, it isn’t smart to get too close.

The same is true of narcissists.  There’s no getting away without feeling like we’re drowning in a bad odor.

The analogy between narcissists and skunks surfaced after I read a Paula’s Pontifications post, “How to Respond to a Narcissist:”

. . .the best way to respond to a narcissist is to NOT respond.

 Walk away.  Don’t look back.

Narcissists need to be the center of attention.  They condition us to believe we can’t live without them when the opposite is true:  they can’t live without our attention.

I was absolutely terrified of my mother and the judge for a very long time.  Each had conditioned me to believe I would be nothing without them.  I discovered the opposite was true.  A few months after I closed the door on my mother’s abuse, she went crazy.  The judge was forced off the bench.

Sometimes the best thing to do is nothing.  Living well really is the best revenge.
