Statue of Liberty

On this eve of our nation’s Declaration of Independence, BettyJean Kling is courageously at the bedside of her daughter Louisa Rodus.

Louisa has been fighting for her life since December 15, 2008, when she was shot in the face with a shotgun by her late sister Denise Richardson’s estranged husband.  At the time, Louisa was lovingly caring for her sister who had ovarian cancer.  Sadly, Denise lost her battle with cancer on March 7, 2009.

This afternoon I listened to a blog talk radio broadcast of BettyJean interviewing the new leaders of NOW on July 1.  It was hard for me to fathom how BettyJean summoned the amazing grace to go on the air with her daughter so gravely ill.  Most folks would curl up in a ball and withdraw from the world.

But, BettyJean is on a mission for her daughter Louisa.  She’s working to get Louisa’s law passed.  She is passionate about domestic violence prevention.  She believes that without Women’s Rights there is no true democracy and believes we need to pass the Equal Rights Amendment.  She is the founder of Free US Now.  She has the fighting spirit of Elizabeth Cady Stanton, who as you know started the women’s movement by editing the Declaration of Independence to read “all men and women” are created equal.

She signs her e-mail messages with a quote that drives us all:

A victim’s first scream is for help;

a victim’s second scream is for justice.

If you are a praying person, please pray for BettyJean and her daughter Louisa.  And, please visit her web siteSymbolically stand in for her daughters Denise and Louisa until we get Louisa’s law and the Equal Rights Amendment passed.  It is truly amazing what she has done.  I admire her tremendously.
